How to start a blog: Steps 1-3

It’s great to read blog posts, but how about writing them? If you want to start a blog, just like this one (and my other blog, Sciencetasticblog) then you’ve come to the right place. In this post, you’ll find out the first three steps of how to begin blogging.

  1. Choose a platform. There are many different blogging platforms that you can use, but the most popular ones a Blogger (owned by Google) and WordPress, which this blog was built on. Although these are more commonly used, you code build our blog on Tumblr, Medium, or any other platform you can find! Once you’ve made your decision, register for an account with your chosen platform.
  2. Know what you are going to write about. You can blog about anything – from pets to music to architecture. You could start a blog about unicorns if you wanted! Some people just blog about their life; others post their photos and art; many have a specific subject, like my blog, Sciencetasticblog (you may have guessed that it’s about science)! Blog about anything you like, but make sure it’s something you enjoy.
  3. Think of a name for your blog. If you have a blog about a specific subject, you could incorporate that into your name – for example Sciencetasticblog has the word ‘science’ in it, and ‘This Family blogs’ includes ‘family’, because we are – you guessed it – a family. I’ve seen blogs with really unusual names, such as ‘The Purple Almond’! Once you have a name, I recommend using it as your domain name (the name you see at the top when you are on a website). The platform you are using will prompt you to enter your domain name, so it can check it’s availability. If it is not available, you could try adding a suffix or prefix. You can find suggestions for these here.

So that’s the first three steps in my ‘How to start a blog’ posts. Have fun getting your blog up and running, and I’ll have the next steps posted soon! 🙂
